The Coulda, Shoulda, Wouldas [Sep. 22nd, 2009|10:46 am]
[Tags|]
[Current Location |Shelby Twp, MI]

Considering how much I know my parents worried about me and my well-being out in San Francisco, I never told them I was let go from Nintendo back in June. I didn’t want them worrying more than they already did, and with my dad’s health as bad as it was, I didn’t want to upset anything. I was also hoping to turn my situation around a little quicker so I could make it sound like I found something else and left (lord knows how long it was that I was unhappy with work). To keep up the charade, I would only call or accept calls from them after 6pm PST, and for better or worse I think it worked.

It wasn’t until I talked with my sisters and brothers-in-law that I learned that on Wednesday, he had made calls to as many members of his immediate family as he probably could before getting really bad and needing to go to the hospital. He more-or-less went down his phone’s contact list, even accidentally calling my Uncle Dane because his name comes before Dawn on the list. He called my sisters Dawn and Jill and spoke with their kids, my grandma, his sister Mary, and maybe a couple more. He didn’t, however, call me. Our best guess is that he would have had he known I wasn’t at work, but not wanting to interrupt me at work, he skipped me until after I would’ve been home (the call times for everyone would verify this theory). Health wise, he must’ve started getting really bad really fast and/or been in pain for some time. There’s definitely a point where he stopped making these calls; he didn’t make it through the whole contact list and he never made it back to me.

"A cup of coffee and a chocolate doughnut with some of those little sprinkles on top" [Sep. 22nd, 2009|10:44 am]
[Tags|]
[Current Location |Shelby Twp, MI]

Like any normal dude of a man, my dad had a thing for donuts and coffee. I can’t count the number of times my dad would get up before anyone else did on Sunday mornings to go get a newspaper then head over to Dunkin’ Donuts to pick up a coffee and a dozen donuts or box of Munchkins. I guess I’d be lying if I said he surprised us with them, as it kind of was routine for a while, but it never went unappreciated.

Unrelated: Ever since his heart attack ten years ago, he’s always made this slack-jawed, eyes-rolled-back face when people would visit him in the hospital - that was his character of a person that was sick and in need of medical attention.

Tying it all together: After he had passed away, the doctors and staff asked my family to give them a moment so they could do whatever they do right after someone passes away. When my family came back to the room moments later, they had removed all the tubes sticking out of his body, changed his linens to a nicer set, and made him a bit more presentable. The problem here was that, try as they might’ve, his mouth remained agape just as he would’ve acted out before.

Also, they had rolled in a cart of fresh brewed coffee and donuts to console the survived present.

Timing [Sep. 22nd, 2009|10:43 am]

[Current Location |United States, Inkster]

At a little after midnight PST Thursday night, my sister Jill called, but I was too late to answer. This was followed by a call from my mom a minute later, which I did get to. I knew something was wrong because of the time (3am EST), but my mom told me my dad was rushed to the hospital. I told her to stay strong, then called my sister back only to have pretty much the same conversation. I was at Brittany’s.

I couldn’t get back to sleep because I couldn’t stop thinking about how I meant to do laundry on Wednesday, but didn’t so I could play Rock Band. About an hour and some of just laying there thinking about how if something happened and I had to rush back to Michigan, I’d be taking dirty clothes with me and that made me feel weird, so out of the blue I woke Brittany up and told her that she could come with me if she wanted to, but I’m going back home to do laundry (I explained my reasoning). We got ready and left and not three minutes on the road, my mom called (it was 1:40something at this point). Before I even answered, I said “oh crap,” and heard exactly what I didn’t want to: My father passed away. And he waited for me to decide to do laundry.

(I took Brittany back home so she could get normal sleep and I could take care of what I had to)

("Location" auto-detected me around Inkster, MI, which I guess is like a Shelby Twp, MI [where I really am]) of southwest Detroit - being about 40 miles away and all)

Pretty Awesome [Dec. 12th, 2008|08:24 pm]
According to Kristen, the full moon we’re experiencing right now is the closest one in 15 years, thanks to the moon’s elliptical orbit around the Earth.

That being said, right now we’re hearing some of the biggest, loudest waves from our apartment.

It’s a bit chilly tonight, but I’m totally going to check it out. It’s pretty awesome.

EDIT: The waves sound a lot bigger than they are, but the moon lit up the beach, and I was enthralled nonetheless.

I am in good hands! [Apr. 12th, 2008|07:54 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]
[Current Location |in good hands]
[feeling |safe!]

I just switched from AAA to AllState over the phone. The procedure was relatively painless... for me.

There's one phrase I try to use whenever I can when conducting business, and that's: "really make it my own." I like it because, if it's said in the right tone, it sounds very adversational (that's a word I just made up, but please use it a lot because it should be a real adverb describing ones conversational tone as sounding like an advertisement).

An example: When the girl was going over the different things that can be applied to save me money in the event of an accident, I commented how I thought it was "great to have so many options because I'm able to take my coverage and really make it my own."

It's a game I like to play. I get bonus points for using the company's slogan.

Which I did.

Near the end, she asked if I had any questions about my new policy, to which I said "Not really, actually. I think I am in good hands."

Basically, I won today. Big time. That black dude with the cool voice doesn't even know what hit him.

(that last part actually sounds "racier" than it actually is. because it's not. at all.)

So This Is It [Feb. 22nd, 2008|06:43 pm]
A very small number of you (3, maybe?) are aware of the following: I'm moving.

For those that didn't know, I'll tell you now: I'm moving.

The opportunity to move to San Francisco, CA has been afforded to me by my employer, and I'm taking them up on the offer.

It's not really a promotion as I'm doing the same thing I'm doing now, but the territory is pretty much super-high-profile in that it surrounds our new corporate offices (located in majestic Redwood City, CA) for the most part. I have to be ready to take it over by April 1, so I'll probably only be around for about another month.

Earlier today, I felt like there was a lot I wanted to share on this subject, but now that I'm actually typing, I think that's all I really feel like saying.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

... I'll try.

Supposedly Sunshine opens March 16.

Health-wise, I'm doing much better than last weekend. This weekend suffers from an incredible lack of western-watching (I watched The Proposition, High Noon, Once Upon A Time In The West, A Fistful Of Dollars, and For A Few Dollars More and it was great).

I guess that's it for now.

Okay bye.

Worst Year-In-Review Ever [Jan. 1st, 2007|04:20 pm]
[listening to |Mitch Vermeersch - Get On The Train]

Hi.

Christmas '06 came and went without a single snow flake. I hope my friends and family enjoy the gifts I bought them. I'm happy with everything I received, so thanks to everyone.

This is completely unrelated to anything, but a few nights ago I had a dream about holding hands with a girl, and it was a good dream.

With my last weekend of the year, I flew to Maryland which, despite the URL to its office of tourism website, is a pretty boring state (terrific drivers there though, I'm not even kidding). There, I met up with Sarah, who, herself, flew in from New Hampshire. The purpose of the adventure was to drive to Delaware to eat at Sonic. Being teased by commercials for the damn place and not having one around here (or in NH) have forced both of us to take such extreme measures. In case you're curious, it was totally worth it.

For New Year's Eve (I'm not sure if that has to be capitalized, but I'm running with it), I went to The Groesbeck household. I drank a lot and enjoyed the company of a lot of great friends (that's how it should be), but I got a little sad at midnight. I pulled through though - I'm a champ.

I really like the format I used for last year's year in review. I'm not doing that again, though.

My Quarter-Century Year )

I'm pretty all right with how things are going right now in my life. The people that are closest to me/give a shit know that I applied for a supervisory position a bit ago and had an interview for it. The interview went pretty well I'd say, but I don't think I'm gonna get it. Even with the minor disappointment that that'd bring, I'm all right with it. I don't know that I'm the most qualified for it, and I'll be happy for whoever gets it. At least I gave it a shot.

Starting today, I'm working on my posture. If you see me slouching, punch me in the face. I mean it.

Time Traveling [Dec. 7th, 2006|05:59 pm]
[listening to |T.I. - What You Know]

It's nearing the time of year where it's the end.

Last year (actually, earlier this year, but regarding last year), I gave a shout out to all my picks regarding media - I'll leave the books to Jayne because books and I aren't on speaking terms. I don't know if I'm going to do the same thing this year (or next, as it were), but I suppose I have time to decide.

I have a couple of adventures coming up that I'm pretty pumped about. The first sees me meeting up with friend/co-worker/space cadet Sarah in Maryland so that we can drive to Delaware to eat at a Sonic Drive-In - because neither of us lives within as sweet a proximity as Hanover, MD does to Bridgeville, DE. The slight possibility exists that we may hit up Nintendo World, but I certainly make no guarantees.

My second adventure takes place in the fuuuuuture (2007), and involves a lot of guys. Jesse, Rikc, and uh... like, six other guys, and I are going to MAGFest.

I'm pretty sure there was something else I was going to say, but it's escaped me. It was probably really awesome.

Like a freight train coming! [Nov. 12th, 2006|09:05 pm]
[listening to |Rerun - Mega Man 2 (Bubble Man)]

This post was originally going to be called "How To Eat A Pizza," but that sounds lame as hell.

It's been a while since I've graced y'all with my presence. Thing's've been busy on my end. Not Shane Gavin working-18-days-in-a-row busy. Not even James Damron shakes-head-like-Jack-and-says-"Hellish week..." busy, but busy is a relative term and I've been busy.

GameStops and EBs 'round the nation have been receiving the Wii interactives, and as far as as the northern-Detroit territory's concerned, I'm trying to get them up and running as fast as I can (typically seven or eight stores in about a nine hour day). Plus I'm working Saturday, which isn't new to me, per se, but not what I've been used to for the past - I don't know - year(?).

These work days make me tired too(!), so I go to bed earlier (9pm - 10pm) than I normally do (1am - 2am).

I received some game related things lately, but it makes me sad to talk about them here. I guess I'll do it over here.

Anyway, on with the show! )
